Welcome

Welcome to the online public consultation of our plans for the future of Ravelrig Quarry.

Stone has been quarried in the Ravelrig area since at least 1853 with the current working area being opened in 1986. The stone quarried at Ravelrig is a valued resource, used in homes, buildings, roads, and infrastructure projects across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

In the next few years we will come to the end of the rock we can quarry under our current planning permission, so we are looking to extend the quarry a short distance to the south. You can quickly see an aerial photo of the extended area on our proposals page. This extension would stay within the existing field boundary towards Balerno and would increase the supply of stone for up to 24 years. There would be no increase in output from the site and we do not propose a change in lorry movements or working hours. The same plant and machinery at the front of Dalmahoy Hill would continue to be used and vehicles would still access the quarry via the A71. This website describes how the quarry works and how an extension would proceed if permitted. Interactive maps used here will allow you to zoom in and out of plans and see how they relate to your location. You can also see photo viewpoints from key positions around the area and a video showing quarry modelling. Draft Plans can be downloaded from the links on the proposal page.
